31 Jan 2 Newhams Row – four extra storeys proposed

Local residents living near 2 Newhams Row have been notified by the council of an application to add four additional storeys to the current building.  Neighbours are deeply unhappy with this greedy proposal for a whole range of reasons, see below, and encourage everyone who shares their concerns to object by the 12 February deadline.  More detail is available on the Council’s website  https://planning.southwark.gov.uk/online-applications/  . For background, the building sits on the edge of the Bermondsey Street Conservation area, close to at least one Grade II listed building. The original warehouse has already been extended upwards by two storeys, in a sympathetic design. The current planning application is to add a further  FOUR FLOORS (six flats) on top. This would make 2 Newhams Row, at 8 storeys,  significantly higher than the majority of buildings in Newhams Row, Bell Yard Mews and on Bermondsey Street.

Local residents are objecting on the grounds of overlooking, blocking of daylight, design quality & aesthetic, impact on the conservation area and non-compliance with planning policies. The height of the building, if permitted, potentially sets a precedent for other future developments in the area, thus compromising the conservation area.
