28 Jan Mayor proposes new Nightlife regulation and management across London

The Mayor has welcomed the publication of a landmark report by the London Nightlife Taskforce, setting out a plan to protect, support and grow the nightlife of the capital. The night-time economy contributes £139 billion to the capital each year, supports more than a million night-time workers, and plays a critical role in tourism and supporting local economies. London’s nightlife includes a diverse range of cultural, social and community activity between 6pm and 6am. The taskforce’s number one recommendation is the creation of a permanent, independent London Nightlife Commission. Second is to make nights safer through partnership and harm reduction; ensure police resources are allocated with regard to crime patterns and footfall, and adopt a supportive public health approach. A further recommendation is a new, London-wide licensing standard to modernise licensing and planning processes, making applications simpler and decisions more consistent.
