BermondseyStreet.London focuses on the area round Bermondsey St, bounded to the east by Tower Bridge Rd, to the north by Druid/Crucifix/St Thomas Streets, to the west by Weston St and to the south by Long Lane, including Bermondsey Square. Because of its long history, much of the area is classed as a conservation area and some of the older buildings are listed. These include industrial buildings, now adapted for other purposes as well as historic houses. BermondseyStreet.London has produced Trail Guides which can guide you round the area while you learn about its heritage and architecture.

We have three parks, Tanner Street Park with tennis courts and play equipment, Leathermarket Gardens with play equipment, the Village Hall and a rose garden and St Mary Magdalen churchyard. In September, there is a one day festival, the Bermondsey Street Festival, when the street is closed to traffic and the parks are full of music and entertainment.

We have galleries, cafes, restaurants, pubs and a cinema. There is a market in Bermondsey Square every Friday (antiques, collectibles). It’s a great space for the outdoor events that are held there from time to time. There are hotels and serviced apartments. Several estate agents on Bermondsey Street can provide information on places for sale or to let.  Free wifi is widely available. There are several co-working offices and also serviced offices.

Sustrans Report: Better Balance of Uses of Public Space

BermondseyStreet.London members have been complaining for some time about the crowded pavements and busy traffic in our narrow medieval street. With support from Southwark Council, BermondseyStreet.London commissioned consultancy Sustrans to investigate and suggest some possible improvements. The Sustrans team carried out traffic, pedestrian and parking surveys, an accessibility audit and consultations online, on the street and at a public workshop.

We have received their final report, which shows clearly that most people want wider pavements and less traffic. The report suggests that space could be made for wider pavements by relocating parking spaces. Through traffic could be reduced by signage at the Long Lane junction or by a point closure between Morocco Street and White’s Grounds. BermondseyStreet.London will be writing formally to the Council shortly asking that they investigate the options and propose improvements.
