03 Oct BermondseyStreet.London event 15 October – talk along the Thames in 1749

Come and join us for a talk about an imaginary Trip along the River Thames in 1749. On Wednesday 15 October, Dr Peter Ross will talk us along the Thames as it was in 1749, based on the 14 foot long printed panorama of the north bank produced by the Buck brothers. Starting at Westminster, we will see the buildings as they were in Georgian times all the way along to the Tower of London. The luminous paintings of Canaletto will bring the journey to life in sunlit colour and John Roque’s detailed map of 1747 will add lots of local detail. Peter will share stories about wharves, warehouses, watermen and water closets, dukes, criminals, cranes and churches, and even a lost palace or two.

Peter was, until recently, Principal Librarian at the City of London’s Guildhall Library, and lectures on the history of English food, English portraiture, and London history.
