03 Sep Bricklayers Arms feasibility published
The Bricklayers Arms roundabout is south of Bermondsey Street, where Tower Bridge Road joins the Old Kent Road. Currently, it’s a big empty roundabout with a traffic highline above and for many years was being ‘saved’ in the hopes of an extended Bakerloo line station being located there. But that future use has been ruled out, and Southwark Council has been developing ideas for the reuse and redesign of the space based on replacement of the roundabout with a smaller road junction. Their feasibility study has been published. It explores new traffic patterns to release road space for other uses; turning the raised road into a garden; leisure uses for the undercroft; adding green space and planting at ground level; residential buildings and work space. The next stage will be further work on traffic flows, costs, funding streams and more. The feasibility study report is available here.
