11 Jul Building Bygones 2 – Police Station at 59 Bermondsey Street

This week, we are pleased to publish Richard Miller’s second Building Bygones, Bobbies, Beadles and Watchmen – a short history of what was a purpose-designed police station at 59 Bermondsey Street. The police service was first established in 1829. Due to the arrival of the railways and the spread of industry in the 1830s, the population of Bermondsey shot up and by the 1850s, Bermondsey needed its own police station, police officers. The Bermondsey Street police station was built and opened in 1851. As the area continued to develop another police station was built at Tower Bridge Road which became the local centre for police operations. From 1908 the Bermondsey Street police station building passed into commercial use.
