A recent email from Mace tells us that from today Thursday 20 March, Fenning Street will re-open for foot traffic. It has been closed for some weeks after the appearance of a sinkhole next to the Edge London Bridge construction site. The picture above shows the sinkhole with a drooping welfare cabin above it. Work has been underway to fix the problem for a several weeks and will continue until the road can be fully re-opened.
There are local concerns that this may be just one of a number of problems that may emerge over the next few years with the movement of groundwater. Large buildings with deep basements have been given planning permission to be built in this area, historically a tidal marsh.
