18 Mar Glassblowing founder wins lifetime award

One of the unique features of Bermondsey Street is our cluster of different arts organisations. Of these, the London Glassblowing Centre is one of the longest-standing. It was founded in 1976 by renowned artist Peter Layton, with a hot glass studio located first in the Leather Exchange and from 2009, in Bermondsey Street, with an ever-changing but always delicious display of colourful studio glass in the gallery. Peter was first a ceramicist who pivoted to glass, with great success. This year, daughter Sophie will take over management of the gallery and studio, allowing Peter to step back. But in the meantime he has received the Lifetime Achievement Award at Collect 2026, the Crafts Council exhibition. You can hear the presentation and Peter’s acceptance speech here .
