Guided walk Hops, Herbs and Hospitals Sunday 17 March 2-4pm

Explore the intertwined history of Southwark and the City of London, from governance to the thriving hop trade, iconic taverns, and medicinal herbs, on the Medicuture Festival’s revealing walking tour. Discover how parts of Southwark were governed by the City of London until 1899. Hear about the importance of the hop trade, with brewers coming to purchase hops to flavour beer. Learn more about the inns and taverns that dominated Borough High Street and the difference between ale and beer as well as the foreign ‘lager’. And then there’s gruit, an herb mixture also used for flavour, also with medicinal properties, as had hops. How did the two great hospitals of the borough develop? All this and more courtesy of walk leader DAfydd Wyn Phillips, Blue Badge guide. The walk starts at Southwark Gateway Needle.
