03 Apr Guinness Estate seeks permission to cut down protected plane tree

The managers of the Guinness Estate in Snowsfields have applied for permission to demolish a hundred-year old  plane tree adjoining Ship and Mermaid Row. The tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order and is also in a Conservation Area. The reason given for the application is to preserve a small substation which abuts the tree as shown in the picture. However, a 2024 tree inspection reported that “Whilst the location is far from ideal the tree has adapted well to its surroundings, and there is no visible decay present on the stem…It is recommended that the tree be re- pollarded back to previous points at approximately 17m. The substation wall, neighbouring fence line and car park surface should be repaired and maintained without causing damage to the stem or exposed root system”.

The tree provides greenery, shade, privacy a habitat for birds, and improves air quality in the Guinness Estate, which is otherwise a ‘hard’ environment with few natural features. To add your voice to local objections go to
