Dressing for Pleasure, Luella Bartley’s latest solo exhibition at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery explores the language of fashion – how our choice of clothing communicates. Bartley, who was previously a fashion designer, spent the first few years of her painting career stripping her subjects bare but has gradually returned to her interest in clothes, as a protective layer and a form of self-expression. Her subjects in this show are all close friends and family members, oversized, stripped of context so that the attention focuses on posture and clothing. The approach is free and playful.
