Some of the stonework at the church is medieval which makes it the oldest building on Bermondsey Street. It has been remodelled several times since then. In the 18th century its main door opened onto the churchyard, as was traditional. Later, burials were stopped in central London on health grounds and the churchyard became a park. The church was re-oriented so that it faces Bermondsey Street.
