03 Jul Peter Jones in Australia seeks local people who might remember….
Peter Jones, now 79, has emailed from Melbourne, Australia, to ask if anyone might remember anything related to his family history in Bermondsey. He grew up here and worked for Southwark Council in the 1960s, but needs help to fill in details of the lives of his grandparents and great-grandparents 1880 – 1918.
One great grandfather, named Evans Triscott Humberstone, had a stall in Borough Market selling cottons, pins, needles and the like. He was noted in the 1881 census as ‘blinded in accident’. Might anyone out there have any further information about Evans’ accident or his later life?
His grandfather was James Samuel Jones and by 1915 he was schoolkeeper at Magdalen Street school. When he was called up in 1916 to fight in World War 1, his wife took over temporarily as schoolkeeper. The site of the school has since been redeveloped into offices and flats. Does anyone have a picture of Magdalen Street school?
