Strategic licensing control to pass to the Mayor of London

The London Mayor has launched a public consultation on his proposed Strategic Licensing Policy designed to deliver a more joined-up and consistent approach and help create a better balance between night-time activity and residential life. The new proposals would also help address the challenges local authorities are facing, dealing with complex licensing processes and limited resources. Shared guidance (the ‘Licensing Playbook’), improved access to data and better coordination could support greater transparency and more consistent and evidence-led decision making. The Mayor will have the power to call in licensing applications of strategic importance. Day-to-day decision-making on licensing would remain with local authorities.
