27 Feb Support local green projects – the Council seeks loans to fund them
You can now invest in council projects in Southwark that reduce carbon emissions and tackle the climate emergency, through Southwark Green Investment. Invest as little as £5 and you will get a fixed 4.6% annual return on your investment, paid every six months over the five year loan period. You will also know your investment is being used for green projects that help your community. In this phase, the Council hopes to raise £1m to fund more cycle hangars, more LED street lighting and making green adaptations to schools and leisure centres.
Phase one will close in 12 weeks or sooner if the £1 million target is reached. The Council says ‘Please only invest what you can afford. You may not be able to get your money back early so you should be prepared to hold the investment until it ends. As with all investments your capital is at risk. To get started, you will need to set up an account with Abundance Investment, who are arranging this investment on the Council’s behalf. It’s a simple, free process. Abundance Investment are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (525432).’

Longer term, the aim is to raise £6m by 2030, making this the UK’s biggest ever council community investment scheme for green projects.
