27 Nov The Legacy of a Master Printmaker at Eames from Thursday 5 December
Kip Gresham, master printmaker, sadly died earlier this year, but now Eames brings us a selection of the prints he produced, working with artists, over 40 years. They include works by Paula Rego, Stephen Chambers, Peter Blake, Elisabeth Frink, Gillian Ayres, Michael Rothenstein, Bryan Pearce, Eduardo Paolozzi, Richard Long, John Hoyland and many more.
Kip himself said “The day-to-day reality is one of dirty hands, bad backs, beautiful colours, seductive papers and, above all, surprises from the artists, those magicians. That is why one does this stuff: It is important.” Though it was his screen printing expertise and skill which he was best known for, Kip also mastered many other techniques. Some of the more complex prints contained as many as 15 base layers, with stencils printed in more than 20 successive layers on top to build up the rich, complex design. He remained at the forefront of innovation and new technologies – seeing it as essential to fully grasp all that was technically possible to match the imagination and drive of the artists he worked with.
