28 Aug Viking ship at St Katharine Docks
The Saga Farmann sailing vessel will be moored at St Katharine Dock until 7 September. It is a very modern reconstruction of a 1000 year old Viking trading vessel, nearly 20 metres long and built from oak and pine wood. When discovered, the original longship had a cargo of whetstones for sharpening blades. Under sail it can go 10-12 knots and it can carry 18 crew members. It set sail from Norway in 2023, and using canals and navigable rivers through Europe arrived at Istanbul, where in the Viking Age, Viking warriors had been recruited by the Byzantine Emperor in Constantinople (now Istanbul) to form his bodyguard. The ship has since been retracing the ancient Viking trade routes through the Aegean, Adriatic and Black Seas. Also Classic boat show will take place at St Katharine Dock Saturday 6 – Sunday 7 September including the Dunkirk Little Ships. It is free to walk around the dock and see the boats.
