14 Apr Waste management plan for our corner of shame

Many of you will be aware of the work that has gone into tackling the shameful waste heaped up continuously at the corner of Bermondsey Street and Morocco Street. It has been an eyesore for many years now, despite all the changes put in place: nothing so far has solved the problem.  The longer the problem continues, the more people start to think it’s OK to leave waste there, and simply add more to the pile. BermondseyStreet.London has been encouraged by signs that the Council is getting its teeth into this long-running problem and has a new plan which includes a whole range of actions:

• Measure the problem – daily monitoring by Street Cleaning Supervisors, at different times of day, to record how much waste, whose waste it is, and if business waste, whether dumps are in line with collection times
• Enforcement Investigation and Business Engagement – find out more about the businesses using the corner for waste, research their waste contracts, investigate missed collections, and explore penalties for repeat offenders
• site visit involving relevant Council teams to investigate further and consider possible changes eg relocating waste collections
• working with waste contractors to improve their performance and communication with businesses.

We are all hoping that this joint approach will make all the difference.
