20 Mar What improvements we want in our streets? – response to Council’s Streets for People
At BermondseyStreet.London’s annual meeting this week, members put their heads together to identify what improvements they want to see in our local streets. Picking up on a few headlines…. Improved drainage came up several times, especially at street corners, specifically a request for a rain garden to soak up the surface water at the corner of Weston Street and Guy Street. Weston Street is expected increasingly to be a north-south route for pedestrians and in that context, wider pavements are needed.
Bermondsey Street drew calls for the removal of bagged and other waste from pavements especially at the corner of Morocco Street and Bermondsey Street. Local councillors are already pursuing a solution for this. Let’s hope it comes imminently! There was a call for the COVID-era wider pavements on Bermondsey Street, made with temporary bollards, to be replaced by permanent pavement surfaces.
More generally there was a heartfelt call for more street trees and green spaces, not just for residents but for the many people who come to work in the area – including the additional 10,000 expected in the tall buildings along St Thomas Street. BermondseyStreet.London will cover these points and others in its response to Southwark Council’s Streets for People consultation.
The deadline for submissions to Streets for People is 31 March. More here https://www.southwark.gov.uk/transport-and-roads/streets-for-people
