16 Jan Works to begin in Leathermarket Gardens

Long-planned works to Leathermarket Gardens are expected to start within the next few weeks and complete by Easter. The work is being funded from CIL paid by developers in previous years. The Council took input from local stakeholders in deciding where to focus its investment in Leathermarket Gardens and Tyers Estate, and in 2024 appointed Blakedown Ltd to deliver the work, but it has been delayed by gas works on Tyers Estate. The works in Leathermarket Gardens are intended to improve accessibility and robustness at the entrance from Tyers Gate, the pergola area and the planting boxes near the village hall (plan pictured above). Better accessibility and robustness will be essential, given the increased numbers of users expected in the park following the new construction on St Thomas Street. However, BermondseyStreet.London fully expects that further work will be needed to enable the park to meet the needs of all users, people who come to the area to work as well as visitors and those who live here, as well as to future-proof the planting and encourage more wildlife.
