25 Jun Visit the Replica of the first ship to circumnavigate the globe

The Nao Victoria, a replica of the sailing ship in which first circumnavigation of the globe was completed will be moored in St Katharine Dock for two weeks. The ship was of the carrack design, famous for its strength and massive cargo capacity, and part of the Spanish expedition to the Moluccas commanded by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. The carrack had a crew of 42 men. The expedition fleet of five ships left Spain in 1519. Two ships made it, sailing across the Atlantic and via Cape Horn, to the Moluccas in the Pacific, and only one, the Victoria, went on to make the crossing of the previously unknown (to western Europeans) Indian Ocean. It reached Spain via the Cape of Good Hope in 1522.

The ship will be in St Katharine Dock, from Tuesday 30 June – Sunday 12 July and open  for visits 10-8pm. More here.
