08 Mar Residents challenge Southwark Council over 26 Leathermarket Street
Residents continue to challenge Southwark Council over its plans to demolish the Leathermarket JMB building at 26 Leathermarket St SE1 3HN and replace it with a taller block of offices and social-rent flats. Everyone agrees that we need more social housing but the proposed scheme has drawn objections from many, including BermondseyStreet.London, due to its impact on the Leathermarket Gardens play area. One big concern has been the blocking of sunlight to the play area, and the sterilising effect of building right up to the boundary of the park. Our experience in other parks, including Tanner Street Park, is that a tall building right on the boundary puts people off going to that part of the park reducing the use of this popular play area. Worse, the proposed scheme goes beyond the site boundary and occupies some of the land in the children’s play area, a significant harm to local children.
