03 Oct Exhibition Outlaws: Fashion Renegades of 80s London
The latest exhibition at the Fashion & Textile Museum opens on Friday 4 October. It is entitled Outlaws: Fashion Renegades of 80s London, and it explores the work of artist-performer-costume designer-club owner Leigh Bowery who opened the Legendary Taboo nightclub in London in 1985. Famously, there were ‘no rules’ at Taboo. Both George Michael and John Galliano were among the high-profile names who flocked there. Clubbers there were encouraged to ‘dress as though your life depended on it’. Leigh was one of those 80s Australians who came to London because he wanted to see the world and stayed. He quickly made a name for himself on the gay club scene and in the artistic community as a wildly innovative dresser and performance artist. His costumes influenced fashion designers Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and John Galliano.
The Fashion & Textile Museum is at 83 Bermondsey Street SE1 3XF. More here http://www.fashiontextilemuseum.org
